Happy 2024 and Happy Ski Season to all who participate! I know many of you have vacations planned somewhere snowy in the upcoming months and I’ve started receiving DM’s asking, ‘How do I dress for skiing?!’ or ‘How do I dress my kids for skiing?!’ Although I’m not the most advanced skier, I still enjoy it and try to get on the slopes whenever we visit Colorado in the winter. It’s especially fun now that Henning is at the age where he can ski {and is starting to get the hang of it!} Of course, I also love a good ski outfit and have tried quite a few brands, so wanted to share my favs.
The general ski dressing rule-of-thumb is three layers on top: your thermals, a jacket and an added layer in-between for additional warmth such as a fleece pullover {depending on the temperature, I find this layer can be omitted}. On the bottom, two layers are typically sufficient: thermals and ski pants/bib. I also love the look of one-pieces but find that most are too short for my 5’10 frame 💔
Of course, accessories are necessary – proper ski socks, gloves, goggles, and a gaiter is always appreciated for added neck warmth. If renting skis/poles/boots, make sure to add in a helmet. My husband remembers when helmets used to be ‘uncool’ back in the 90s and early 2000s but really most everyone on the mountain wears them these days. I’ve heard more than one story how they’ve literally saved someones life, plus they keep your head warm! It’s a win-win.
My go-to’s when it comes to slope style are St. Bernard’s, Shopbop, Net-A-Porter, MyTheresa and Matches. For technical purposes, I think Obermeyer {I’m sure y’all have heard me rave about my holy grail tall-girl ski pants made by them}, North Face, and Bogner make the creme da la creme of skiwear. They get the job done at {mostly} reasonable prices and will be pieces you can carry with you to the snow for the years to come. For fashion-forward outerwear pieces, Cordova, Perfect Moment and Goldbergh are it right now. From Aspen to the Swiss Alps, you’ll see ladies skiing in eye-catching pieces from these brands.
To Recap:
Here’s a quick checklist:
- Skiwear: Dressing in layers is crucial to keep yourself warm and dry. Opt for moisture-wicking base layers, insulated ski pants, and a waterproof jacket. Don’t forget gloves or mittens, a helmet, and goggles to protect against the cold and snow.
- Skis, Boots, and Poles: You can rent or purchase depending on how often you plan on skiing.
- Safety Gear: A helmet is a non-negotiable safety item IMO!
